2010 Chateau de Maligny Chablis Premier Cru Fourchaume

When I drink white wine, I love the bracing acidity, minerality, and freshness of a good Chablis. I had read wonderful things about tonight’s wine, so I was very excited to try it, but I ended up sadly disappointed.

Chablis is a subregion in northern Burgundy that really specializes in whites made from the Chardonnay grape. There is minimal usage of oak which means that most Chablis are highly acidic and crisp, refreshing and sometimes austere, with green apples, citrus, chalk, stones and more usually cutting through.

Tonight’s wine seemed both flat and boring. The lemon in the nose was more pith than fruit, and while the wine certainly wasn’t unpleasant, there was no acidic zing, no bright fruit, no fun. I was unimpressed. Perhaps I bought a bottle that had been stored incorrectly, as I’ve read other tasting notes for this wine that do not seem to correspond with my experience. If I try it again, I will certainly update this post. Right now, I’m just bummed.

Though I was raised (very fortunately) on daily good French wines, I now find under $30 French wine almost uniformly disappointing. Try Matua Sauvignon Blanc (New Zealand) for less than $15…..better than most Graves at double the price. Rodney

  2. I love New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, but haven't yet tried the Matua. Thanks for the suggestion!
