2010 Bosco Montepulciano d’Abruzzo

Sometimes I wish wine sellers wouldn’t try so hard. I was looking through the wine at Costco recently when I came upon the 2010 Bosco Montepulciano d’Abruzzo on sale for $9. I like Montepulciano, so I came in closer to check it out. At that moment, the staff member, trying to help, starts to tell me about the wine, loudly boasting that if I first aerate the wine with my Vinturi, then decant it, after a mere 36 hours I would be rewarded with the best Montepulciano of my life. Maybe he was right, but who buys a $9 wine with the expectation that it needs not only a gadget, but a full day and a half open before it can be enjoyed? If I hadn’t known anything about wine, that would have been a sure way to steer me clear.

Instead, I smiled politely, grabbed a bottle, took it home and drank it that night without fuss. I did think the Vinturi helped open it up a bit, but other than that, this was a pop ‘n pour bottle for me, and my hubby and I happily finished the bottle with dinner.

There was a musty, old worldiness (excuse the grammar) to the wine that I enjoyed quite a lot. It was tasty and very well balanced even if a bit simple. In my mind a great daily drinker and a decent value bottle of wine. From what I tasted that night, I do not imagine an extra day of decanting would have brought out much more, but if you have the 36 hours to kill and want to try it out, feel free to drop me an email and tell me how it worked out for you.
