2005 Mosella Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese
Ah, German Riesling. Tonight’s wine is from the Mosel region of Germany, and more specifically the famous Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard. As you can see from the photo, this wine is starting to age, it is golden, almost turning orange, and while it is sweet (spätlese is a later picking, more sugar in the grapes) it is balanced and not cloying. The nose is peach and honey and even honeysuckle floral with only the faintest whisper of petrol. I liked it quite a lot, though it left a little to be desired when it came to complexity. It drank gorgeously with food, confirming the nose with more honey and even apple cider in the finish.
