Wine Review: 2010 Francis Ford Coppola Pinot Noir Director’s Cut

In general, I don’t drink a lot of California Pinot Noir. The crazy fruit bombs with tons of wood are not my ideal expression of the grape. There are a handful of makers out of CA that I am obsessed with though (Gary Farrell, Rivers Marie, Failla and Merry Edwards, to name a few) so when I come across something from the Russian River Valley or the Sonoma Coast, I like to give it a try.

The 2010 Francis Ford Coppola Director’s Cut is a Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley, so that was already a plus in my book. Earthy cherry and cranberry, with a little mushroom on the nose, it’s smell actually reminded me of Oregon Pinot. There is bright fruit and a touch of wood and spice. It’s a bit one-dimensional, but very pleasant.  It would pair well with lots of dishes, so while it isn’t anything special, I think it’s a solid daily drinker.
